11. Nicola Roberts - Lucky Day
Before everything went off the rails for Nicola, her handlers picked this Dragonette-penned gem for her second single. Her first release, 'Beat Of My Drum' stalled at #27 on the UK charts, but everyone was all "oh this could be a total fluke for no logical reason other than that we want to believe it is" and figured 'Lucky' could be just the kind of midtempo corker to turn everything around. But, while it was easy on the ears and had a simple-but-cute New York City-filmed video in tow, 'Day' ended up being just like everything else Nicola Roberts does - critically loved and commercially ignored. Chart peak: UK - #37
10. Kylie - Put Your Hands Up (Pete Hammond Remix)
K-Mo's 2011 was largely spent on the road, thrilling European and Australian audiences with a concert tour featuring water jets, a "splash zone" in which fans got wet (from the water, not excitement...hopefully), and an entire ancient Greek temple on stage. It was universally lauded as a triumph, and set the benchmark for "those other" divas, namely Madge and one Miss Gaga. The Daily Telegraph even noted that "when it comes to the classier brand of arena kitsch, she, not Lady Gaga, remains supreme authority." But K-Mo didn't stop there. In 2011 Kylie traveled to the U.S. for her second-ever North American tour, and put out single 'Put Your Hands Up' as a kind of promo track for her trek. And her fans lapped it up - the song became her fifth number one on the dance chart in a row in America and for good reason - because it is brilliant. Chart peak: US Dance - #1
9. Hyuna - Bubble Pop
Hyuna is a Korean pop star who has been no stranger to success. As a member of the girlgroup Wonder Girls and then as one of different girlgroup 4Minute, she racked up a sizeable number of hits. But it was when she finally went solo that she really came into her booty-shaking own. Like a tiny Korean Beyonce she shimmied and shook her ass off and it paid off in spades. Her video for the genius 'Bubble Pop' was key in the wave of K- and J- pop awareness sweeping the English-speaking world, and the song ruled any half-decent Fire Island iPod dock for the entire summer. We're also assuming it sparked a run on "BOY" t-shirts, but we don't have the figures for that handy. Chart peak: Korea - #4
8. One Direction - What Makes You Beautiful
So there's this whole "boyband resurgence" thing happening (particularly in the UK) which means quite a few four-and-fivesomes of hot young gentlemen have been thrown at us over the last 12 months. The Wanted and JLS each solidified their status as the premiere Euro boybands, and set their sights on America - The Wanted even look like they might make it, as their track 'Glad You Came' is gaining steam in the US. But it was the adorably earnest barely-legal boys from One Direction who stole the show with their unpretentious brand of pop perfection. While JLS and The Wanted tried to prove they were SUPER-LEGIT ARTISTES, the third-place runners up of UK X-Factor decided to cut an album and just have fun with it. 'What Makes You Beautiful' was one of the biggest surprises of the year, with its catchy chorus and its almost rebellious refusal to play into the autotune donkfest that pop has become. And we are all better for having heard it. Chart peak: UK - #1, AUS - #8
7. Wynter Gordon - Buy My Love
There's something about this track that transcends the sort of C-list status Wynter Gordon holds in the pop world. She first guested on Flo Rida's 'Sugar' and scored a top 5 hit in the States, but then kind of trailed off into "come see me at Splash nightclub tonight at 1am" mediocrity pretty quickly. Sure, the gays love her, but they're not a hard group to crack if you have access to glitter and cheap amphetamines. So when 'Buy My Love' made its debut late in the summer, we were a little blown away. The song's kitschy without being sappy, ironic enough for the hipsters but not in an annoying way, and comes with a rather inspired video. Which, of course, means it was totally ignored by just about everyone. Because that's how these things work. Sadface, etc. Chart peak: AUS - #77, US Dance - #7
6. Adele - Rolling In The Deep
There's not much we need to say about this track. Its worldwide dominance is undisputed. Its singer's genius is unchallenged. The subtle and quietly intense video is pitch-perfect. And no matter how many times we hear it, 'Rolling' was and will remain, A JAM. Chart peak: US - #1, UK - #2, AUS - #3
5. Maroon 5 feat. Christina Aguilera - Moves Like Jagger
Ok so if 'Rolling In The Deep' is one song we don't need to justify making this list, 'Moves Like Jagger' might just be the flip side. It's gimmicky (the whistle, the presence of Xtina for LITERALLY NO REASON), it's pandering, and the video is weird for several reasons, not the least of which being that they actually stretched the footage of Miss Aguilera so she wouldn't look like she ate a dumptruck on the way to the shoot. But no one can deny that the song was EVERYWHERE this year, and despite that, we somehow didn't get sick of it. If anything, we warmed to it a bit more with each listen. And that's the mark of a real hit, ScopiSubjects. When this track originally debuted we said no one would remember it in a year. We've never been more delighted to be proven wrong. Chart peak: US - #1, UK - #2, AUS - #2
4. Lady Gaga - Edge Of Glory
We're over Gaga. A lot of people are over Gaga. Yes she's brilliant and genius and blah blah, but she's also the reason every gayborhood was full of guys in ridiculous jean cutoffs and black military boots this summer. She's always essentially been Madonna's shoutier, bitchier, crazier little sister, but 2011 was the year when she all of a sudden decided that everything she does is SUPER IMPORTANT (it's not) and that being a pop star comes with some sort of great responsibility to be douchy and heavy handed (it doesn't). But 2011 is also the year that, in between spastic bouts of insanity and preachiness, she also gave us some great music. 'Edge Of Glory' is a glittering firework of a song that couldn't even be killed by its shambolic music video (notice we put up a RATHER TREMENDOUS live performance below instead), and for a few precious short-lived months, it gave us back the fun, poppy Gaga we fell in love with so long ago. Chart peak: US - #3, UK - #6
3. Will Young - Jealousy
2011 was the year that Will Young reminded everyone why he is amazing. The "Kelly Clarkson of the UK" (he won the first ever Pop Idol tv show, even before American Idol existed...so really Kelly is the US Will Young but whatever) has really been going pretty strong since his first single back in 2002, but to be quite honest it could have gone either way for him after his greatest hits package. His first few singles were guaranteed success thanks to winning Idol, and then the flurry of press coverage when he came out cemented his status as a bona-fide media darling. Right about that time he proved he had the songwriting and vocal chops to be the real deal, and then...well, he just got kinda quiet for a while after releasing his retrospective. Diminishing chart returns on each of his tracks meant 'Jealousy' was released at a time when Young hadn't even appeared in the top 20 of the singles countdown in 3 years (though, to be fair, his albums consistently have been top 10 smashes). As the lead single of Will's fifth studio record, hopes were high. But they were all exceeded when this glittering synth gem gave us all a taste of Young's new, electro-chill direction. The Guardian said it best when it described the track as "stately." 'Jealousy' is a respectable, honorable, mature earworm of a song. And it's got some killer remixes to boot. Chart peak: UK - #5
2. Selena Gomez and the Scene - Love You Like A Love Song
This song is tremendous. We really can't overstate that enough. Had it been given a slightly better production treatment and a bit more promotion (though not through live performances - seriously, it's terrible live, google it) it could have been huge. Like, Kylie's 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head' huge. But instead, whoever was in charge of the whole Selena Gomez thing gave the song to a producer, thought "eh, that's good enough" and chucked it out as a single, and instead of a world-conquering stomper, we got a mid-level hit that sounds a bit like a demo recording that would leak on the internet ahead of a huge superstar's release but is still knock-down, drag-out PHENOMENAL. So even though it's riding high on our list of tracks of the year, we still can't help but feel this was a bit of a missed opportunity. And Miss Gomez, we're still waiting for the remixes. Thanks. 1. Cher Lloyd - Want U Back
So there are a couple things that could get us into trouble with this pick. First, it's Cher Lloyd. A ton of people hate her. A ton of people love her too, but they're usually pretty quiet about it and just download her tracks in the dark at night from a Starbucks nowhere near their house out of fear someone they know could see them. But generally we are comfortable saying that Cher Lloyd is a....divisive figure. The second issue is that this track isn't OFFICIALLY out as a single yet. Its release date is pegged for February 12, 2012 and it's only just recently gone out to radio stations. But, thanks to THE WORLD WE NOW LIVE IN, it's available as a single download from its parent album, so we are including it in this list. Because it is amazing. And also since it's like, 8 hours until 2012 and we feel kind of bad our list is coming out so late and giving a tip for what is going to be huge in the new year makes us feel a bit more relevant and on point. But mostly because it's amazing. It's fresh, it's got personality, and it is, most importantly, unique. It sounds nothing like the autotuned Katy Perry/Ke$ha/Britney dreck that is constantly on the radio and which makes every day sound like one long thumping headache of a song, and for that, Cher, we thank you. HAPPY NEW YEARS: NYE OUTFIT, MAKEUP, HAIR, NAILS, ACCESSORIES + WHAT I CARRIED IN MY CLUTCH!
Hey girls,
This is going to be all about New Years Eve! What I wore, how I did my makeup, how I painted my nails, how I styled my hair, accessories I used, what i carried in my clutch and everything like that! This is like a FOTN, OOTN, NOTD, HOTD and what's in my purse all rolled into one huge post! I really hope you enjoy reading this!

Makeup
I wanted the main focus of my makeup to be my flase eyelashes so I didn't go too crazy with the eyeshadow or lips. I'm wearing MAC Electra eyeshadow and MAC Forgery on my lid, MAC Black Tied in my crease and Vanilla as a highlight. I used my Chanel Liquid Eyeliner to create a winged out look and I set that with my MAC Black Tied eyeshadow. I'm wearing Ardell Demi Lashes and I didn't cut them or anything, I just put them straight on with some eyelash adhesive I already had because they didn't come with some. I'm wearing on my face Chanel Matt Lumiere foundation and Pressed Powder, Studio Sculpt concealer, Chanel Soleil De Tan bronzer and MAC Ladyblush Creme Blush. On my lips I'm wearing MAC Lustering Lipstick with MAC Petite Indulgence Creme Sheen over the top. I really like the way it turned out because I hate using false lashes and looking over the top but because I went pretty basic with everything else, the lashes didn't seem so dramatic.
Purse
I used the little wrislet that came with my DKNY Golden Delicious perfume which was a perfect size and held everything I needed it to for the night! It also perfectly matched the gold heels of my shoes which was awesome. I also loved how it had a chain you could hold it from or you could put the chain inside the purse and just carry it like a clutch. Scroll down to see the things I brought with me for the night in this purse.
Nails
I wore OPI Shorts Story with OPI Happy Anniversary over the top. Shorts Story on it's own has no shimmer and is a fairly light pink but when you put the shimmery white colour Happy Anniversary over the top, it creates a gorgeous sparkly fairy floss pink! I also used OPI Alpine Snow and a nail brush to draw a quick little design on my thumb nails, I didn't have the patience to do all of my nails haha! The main reason I chose to make my nails this colour was because it perfectly matches the shade of pink in my shoes!
Ring
I just wore my white gold diamond ring that I wear everyday! Mixing metals is a huge trend so I wouldn't usually mix gold and white gold together but I decided to try it out.
Shoes
I wore my Guess Billows which I bought especially for NYE and kind of based my whole outfit off. You can read the crazy adventure I went through buying these shoes on boxing day here. For 5 inch heels they are suprisingly fairly easy to walk in and quite comfortable.
Hair
I actually went really simple with my hair! I washed it using John Frieda Sheer Blonde Moisturising Shampoo and conditioned with Macadamia Oil Hair Masque. I used Nak Moroccan Argan Oil when I got out of the shower then blowdried. I used Redkin Satin Wear as my heat protectant and straightened my hair with my usual straightener. I was going to curl my hair but didn't have time to wash it the night before and my curls don't last at all if I wash my hair right before I do them so I just straightened.
Necklace
I also wore my white gold diamond necklace I always wear which is a very simple item but adds a lot of detail.
Cardigan
I always bring a little jacket or coverup when I go out so because it's NYE and I was going to be out at least past 12, I brought one of my warmer cardigans for when I got cold. It's a very basic black but has some really cute lace detailing at the back and top at the front.
Skirt
I was just wearing a basic black bandage skirt which is a really simple fashion piece but is a wardrobe staple! I always wear a bandage skirt when I want my outfit to be a bit dressier than if I wore mini shorts or jeans. It hugs and accentuates any curves you have which is great if you want to look a little more curvier.
Top
I was deciding wether to go with a really crazy sparkly sequin top or something more simple and I ended up going with this plain black blouse because I think it really allows my hair, makeup, purse and shoes to have more attention! It's a really lovely top by the brand Filo and is super detailed! It has really gorgeous details on the shoulder straps and a very low back. It's also synched in at many places and has this sort of piece of fabric that hangs of the actual shirt that I tried to show in the pictures above.
What I Carried In My Clutch
So I have already mentioned this but this is the clutch that I got as a gift with the DKNY Golden Delicious perfume. It was perfect for NYE and fit everything I needed it to! It also perfectly matched my shoes which was a bonus!
So here's a little overview showing you how everything sort of had it's own little place.
Bobby Pin- To get my fringe out of my way.
Headband- In case I decided to put my hair up.
Eyelash glue- In case my lashes decided to fall off, which they didn't thank god!
Perfume- A cute little mini perfume sample to freshen up.
Breath mints- At events like NYE, it's usually pretty loud and you have to talk close to people's faces so you don't want to have bad breath, that's just gross! Also, Listerine PocketPaks are very slim and portable so they don't take up much room in your purse!
Mirror- A cute little hand mirror to help me when re-applying my lipgloss or using blot film.
Blot Film- I love the MAC ones for when my skin gets oily and if my powder doesn't fit in my purse.
Lip Products- I always bring the lip colours I'm wearing to touch up wherever I go.
I was wearing MAC Lustering Lipstick and MAC Petite Indulgence Creme Sheen Gloss so I brought them to touch up!
I always carry cash, ATM cards, ID and transport passes when I go out!
They fit perfectly into this little pocket of my clutch so it keeps them safe.
Phone Case
The phone case I was using is just this plain white sparkly gem one. Pretty basic and not one of my bedazzled ones because they didn't fit into the clutch as well and this simple one did.
New Years Resolutions

Katy Perry and Russell Brand are getting a Divorce after 14 months of Marriage
Perry and Brand started dating in late 2009, with the "Get Him to the Greek" actor proposing over the New Year's weekend two years ago. The couple married on Oct. 23, 2010 -- two days before the singer's 26th birthday -- in a lavish ceremony in India.
Rumors of a possible split were flying over the Christmas weekend after the couple allegedly spent the holiday apart, and were both photographed without their wedding rings. Brand and Perry do not share any children.

Biography
1986–2004: Early life
Lady Gaga was born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta on March 28, 1986, in New York City. Brought up in the family home in Manhattan's Upper West Side, Lady Gaga is of Italian and more distant French-Canadian descent, and is the daughter of Cynthia (née Bissett) and Joseph Germanotta, an internet entrepreneur. The elder of two children, Lady Gaga has one sister, Natali, a fashion student, who was born in 1992. Lady Gaga has stressed that – despite her seemingly affluent upbringing – she did not come from a wealthy background, stating that her parents "both came from lower-class families, so we've worked for everything—my mother worked eight to eight out of the house, in telecommunications, and so did my father."
From the age of 11, Lady Gaga – who was raised Roman Catholic – attended the Convent of the Sacred Heart, a private all-girls Roman Catholic school on Manhattan's Upper East Side. She described her academic life in high school as "very dedicated, very studious, very disciplined" but also "a bit insecure" as she told in an interview, "I used to get made fun of for being either too provocative or too eccentric, so I started to tone it down. I didn't fit in, and I felt like a freak." Acquaintances dispute that she did not fit in at school. "She had a core group of friends; she was a good student. She liked boys a lot, but singing was No. 1," recalled a former high school classmate.
A keen musician, left-handed Lady Gaga began playing the piano at the age of four, went on to write her first piano ballad at 13, and started to perform at open mike nights by the age of 14. Her passion for musical theatre brought her lead roles in high school productions, including Adelaide in Guys and Dolls and Philia in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. She also appeared in a very small role as a mischievous classmate in the television drama series The Sopranos in a 2001 episode titled "The Telltale Moozadell" in addition to unsuccessfully auditioning for parts in New York shows. When her time at the Convent of the Sacred Heart came to an end, her mother encouraged her to apply for the Collaborative Arts Project 21 (CAP21), a musical theatre training conservatory at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. After gaining early admission at 17, she eventually lived in an NYU dorm on 11th Street.
Being part of such a prestigious performance course, Lady Gaga sharpened her songwriting skills while composing essays and analytical papers on art, religion, social issues and politics including a thesis on pop artists Spencer Tunick and Damien Hirst; such research prepared her for her future career focus in "music, art, sex and celebrity." She also tried out for and won auditions while at CAP21, including the part of an unsuspecting diner customer where MTV's Boiling Points – a prank reality television show – was being filmed. Notwithstanding these achievements, she felt that she was more creative than some of her classmates. "Once you learn how to think about art, you can teach yourself," she said. By the second semester of her sophomore year, she withdrew from the school to focus on her musical career. Her father agreed to pay her rent for a year, on the condition that she re-enroll at Tisch if unsuccessful. "I left my entire family, got the cheapest apartment I could find, and ate shit until somebody would listen," she remembers.
2005–07: Career beginnings
Settled in a small apartment on Rivington Street towards the summer of 2005, Lady Gaga recorded a couple of songs with hip-hop singer Grandmaster Melle Mel, for an audio book accompanying the children's book The Portal in the Park, by Cricket Casey. She also began a band called the Stefani Germanotta Band (SGBand) with some friends from NYU – guitarist Calvin Pia, bassist Eli Silverman, drummer Alex Beckham and booking manager Frank Fredericks – in September of that year. The band played a mixture of songs: some self-penned alongside classic rock numbers like Led Zeppelin's "D'yer Mak'er". Playing in bars like the Greenwich Village's The Bitter End and the Lower East Side's the Mercury Lounge, the band developed a small fan base and caught the eye of music producer Joe Vulpis. Soon after arranging time in Vulpis' studio in the months that followed, SGBand were selling their extended plays Words and Red and Blue at gigs around New York while becoming a local fixture of the downtown Lower East Side club scene.
SGBand reached their career peak at the 2006 Songwriters Hall of Fame New Songwriters Showcase at The Cutting Room in June where Wendy Starland, a singer and model, appeared as a talent scout for music producer Rob Fusari. Starland informed Fusari – who was searching for a female singer to front a new band – of Lady Gaga's ability and contacted her. With SGBand disbanded, Lady Gaga traveled daily to New Jersey to work on songs she had written and compose new material with the music producer. While in collaboration, Fusari compared some of her vocal harmonies to those of Freddie Mercury, lead singer of Queen. It was Fusari who helped create the moniker Gaga after the Queen song "Radio Ga Ga". Lady Gaga was in the process of trying to come up with a stage name when she received a text message from Fusari that read "Lady Gaga." He explained, "Every day, when Stef came to the studio, instead of saying hello, I would start singing 'Radio Ga Ga'. That was her entrance song" and that the text message was the result of a predictive text glitch that changed "radio" to "lady". She texted back, "That's it," and declared, "Don't ever call me Stefani again." The New York Post, however, has reported that this story is incorrect, and that the name resulted from a marketing meeting.
Although the musical relationship between Fusari and Lady Gaga was unsuccessful at first, the pair soon set up a company titled Team Lovechild in which they recorded and produced electropop tracks and sent them to music industry bosses. Joshua Sarubin, the head of A&R at Def Jam Recordings, responded positively and vied for the record company to take a chance on her "unusual and provocative" performance. After having his boss Antonio "L.A." Reid in agreement, Lady Gaga was signed to Def Jam in September 2006 with the intention of having an album ready in nine months. However, she was dropped by the label after only three months – an unfortunate period of her life that would later inspire her treatment for the music video for her 2011 single "Marry the Night". Devastated, Lady Gaga returned to the solace of the family home for Christmas and the nightlife culture of the Lower East Side. She became increasingly experimental: fascinating herself with emerging neo-burlesque shows, go-go dancing at bars dressed in little more than a bikini in addition to experimenting with drugs. Her father, however, did not understand the reason behind her drug intake and could not look at her for several months. "I was onstage in a thong, with a fringe hanging over my ass thinking that had covered it, lighting hairsprays on fire, go-go dancing to Black Sabbath and singing songs about oral sex. The kids would scream and cheer and then we'd all go grab a beer. It represented freedom to me. I went to a Catholic school but it was on the New York underground that I found myself." It was then when she became romantically involved with a heavy metal drummer in a relationship and break-up she likened to the musical film Grease: "I was his Sandy, and he was my Danny, and I just broke." He later became an inspiration behind some of her later songs.
During this time, she met performance artist Lady Starlight, who helped mold her on-stage persona. Starlight explained that, upon their first meeting, Lady Gaga wanted to perform with her to songs she had recorded with Fusari. Like SGBand, the pair soon began performing at many of the downtown club venues like the Mercury Lounge, The Bitter End, and the Rockwood Music Hall. Their live performance art piece was known as "Lady Gaga and the Starlight Revue" and, billed as "The Ultimate Pop Burlesque Rockshow", was a low-fi tribute to 1970s variety acts. Soon after, the two were invited to play at the 2007 Lollapalooza music festival in August that year. The show was critically acclaimed, and their performance received positive reviews. Having initially focused on avant-garde electronic dance music, Lady Gaga had found her musical niche when she began to incorporate pop melodies and the glam rock of David Bowie and Queen into her music.
While Lady Gaga and Lady Starlight were busy performing, producer Rob Fusari continued to work on the songs he had created with Lady Gaga. Fusari sent these songs to his friend, producer and record executive Vincent Herbert. Herbert was quick to sign her to his label Streamline Records, an imprint of Interscope Records, upon its establishment in 2007. Lady Gaga later credited Herbert as the man who discovered her, adding "I really feel like we made pop history, and we're gonna keep going." Despite a successful debut, Mermaid Music LLC – her production team – was sued in March 2010 by past producer Rob Fusari who claimed that he was entitled to a 20% share of its earnings. Lady Gaga's lawyer, Charles Ortner, described the agreement with Fusari as "unlawful" and declined to comment. Five months later, the New York Supreme Court dismissed both the lawsuit and a countersuit by Lady Gaga. 2011–present: Born This Way
Lady Gaga's second studio album and third major release Born This Way was released on May 23, 2011. Settled in a small apartment on Rivington Street towards the summer of 2005, Lady Gaga recorded a couple of songs with hip-hop singer Grandmaster Melle Mel, for an audio book accompanying the children's book The Portal in the Park, by Cricket Casey. She also began a band called the Stefani Germanotta Band (SGBand) with some friends from NYU – guitarist Calvin Pia, bassist Eli Silverman, drummer Alex Beckham and booking manager Frank Fredericks – in September of that year. Starland informed Fusari – who was searching for a female singer to front a new band – of Lady Gaga's ability and contacted her. With SGBand disbanded, Lady Gaga traveled daily to New Jersey to work on songs she had written and compose new material with the music producer. Lady Gaga's lawyer, Charles Ortner, described the agreement with Fusari as "unlawful" and declined to comment. Five months later, the New York Supreme Court dismissed both the lawsuit and a countersuit by Lady Gaga. In addition to such strife, Lady Gaga has been tested borderline positive for lupus, but claims not to be affected by the symptoms. The revelations caused considerable dismay amongst her fans, leading to Lady Gaga addressing the matter in an interview with Larry King, saying she hopes to avoid symptoms by maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
2011–present: Born This Way
Lady Gaga's second studio album and third major release Born This Way was released on May 23, 2011. Described as "a marriage of electronic music with major metal or rock 'n' roll, pop, anthemic style melodies with really sledge-hammering dance beats" and referred to as an album "about what what keeps us up at night and what makes us afraid", she stated. Lady Gaga characterized her new music as "something so much deeper than a wig or lipstick or a fucking meat dress" and upon hearing it, Akon remarked that she is taking music to the "next level". Its arrival followed the release of its eponymous lead single "Born This Way" on February 11, 2011, which was performed live for the first time at the 53rd Grammy Awards two days after its release. The song, dealing with self-acceptance regardless of race or sexual orientation, debuted atop the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the 19th number-one debut and the 1,000th number-one single in the history of the charts, while selling more than 3 million digital copies in the United States by October 2011, becoming her eighth consecutive single to exceed the sales of two million. A music video was released for the song, showing Lady Gaga giving birth to a new race amidst surrealistic images; critics noted artistic and cultural references and praised its concept. Lady Gaga lent her vocals elsewhere, pairing with Elton John to record an original duet for the animated feature film Gnomeo & Juliet. The song, titled "Hello, Hello", was released on February 11, 2011, without Lady Gaga's vocals. The duet version was only featured in the film. In February, Lady Gaga's concerts of her then-ongoing tour at Madison Square Garden in New York City, were filmed for an HBO special aired in May. The special was nominated for five Emmy Awards.

Lady Gaga continued her musical endeavors, releasing "You and I" and "Marry the Night" as succeeding singles from Born This Way, as well as recording songs with veteran artists like Cher and Tony Bennett. The song recorded with Bennett is a jazz version of "The Lady Is a Tramp", while Lady Gaga described her duet with Cher as a "massive" and "beautiful" track, which she "wrote a long time ago, and I've never put it on one of my own albums for, really, no particular reason." On August 28, at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, Lady Gaga won two awards out of four nominations, and attended the event dressed as Jo Calderone, her male alter-ego. She wore a blond wig as a nod to the famous performance of Marilyn Monroe for John F. Kennedy and changed the lyrics to her song "You and I" specifically for the performance. Later on, Lady Gaga won four awards out of six nominations in the main categories at the 2011 MTV Europe Music Awards in November, for Best Female, Biggest Fans, Best Song and Best Video; the latter two with "Born This Way". On November 14, 2011, Lady Gaga and her choreographer and creative director Laurieann Gibson parted ways, after working together for four years. Gibson's assistant Richard Jackson replaced her as Lady Gaga's choreographer.
Lady Gaga released her fourth extended play A Very Gaga Holiday on November 22, and followed an appearance in her Thanksgiving Day television special entitled A Very Gaga Thanksgiving. The television special was critically acclaimed. and attained 5.749 million American viewers upon original airing.
